What it does

When installed, the agent searches for information about a game, its engine, or a modding technique in a systematic way. It checks the local knowledge base first, then searches live sources such as GitHub, Nexus Mods, Steam Workshop, Thunderstore, Reddit and YouTube. When a page is dead or deleted, it looks for an archived copy on the Wayback Machine or archive.today, and it attaches source URLs to every conclusion so findings can be verified. When a page needs a login, it asks the human to paste the content rather than handling credentials itself.

Great for

  • Modders starting work on an older game whose community forums have gone offline
  • Researchers who need claims about game file formats or tools backed by traceable URLs
  • Contributors writing field notes for a modding knowledge base

Skip it if

  • Anyone looking for pirated games, leaked code, cracked tools or key generators: the skill explicitly refuses to fetch these
  • Users who need a quick answer and do not need source-backed research, since the process is deliberately slow and rate-limited

Try asking

  • “How did people mod this game before the old forum went offline?”
  • “Find GitHub tools for reading this game's archive format and check recent commits and issues.”
  • “Look for Nexus and Thunderstore mods for this game version and summarise the techniques used, with links.”
  • “Find a YouTube video transcript that lists the tool links for this modding method.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Game Research Web SearchInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    game-research-websearch.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip game-research-websearch.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip game-research-websearch.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent the exact game name and engine if known, since engine names surface answers from other games' threads.
  • Provide login-gated content by pasting visible thread text rather than cookies or browser output, as the skill requires.
  • Expect slower results on purpose: the skill throttles requests to archive and community sites to stay within their rules.
