What it does

When you want to mod a game, this skill makes the agent first investigate the game on your computer: where it is installed, what engine it uses, whether it has anti-cheat, which mod loaders are already present, and where saves and configs live. It also checks whether your machine can run the game at all, such as a Windows game on macOS or Linux, and searches online modding communities for the current recommended route. The findings are written into a MODDING_PLAN.md file that later steps rely on.

Great for

  • Players or developers who want to know whether a specific game can be modded before investing time
  • Modders starting a new project who want a documented plan with the right loader and install steps
  • People running Windows games on macOS or Linux who need a compatibility check

Skip it if

  • Online-only or live-service games with anti-cheat, where modding can get accounts banned and the skill itself warns to treat them as protected
  • Anyone expecting a guaranteed answer: the scan cannot see anti-cheat drivers or launcher protection outside the game folder, so manual checks are still needed

Try asking

  • “Can I mod Hollow Knight? What engine is it built on?”
  • “How do people mod Stardew Valley and which loader should I use?”
  • “Figure out how I can run and mod this Windows-only game on my Mac”
  • “Start a modding plan for my installed Skyrim copy”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Game Recon for ModdingInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    game-recon.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip game-recon.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip game-recon.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Pass the game folder path directly if the game is from GOG, itch, or a standalone install, since store scanning will miss it.
  • Read the 'also' line from the scan output when several engine signals appear, because launchers and web helpers can mislead the top result.
  • Review MODDING_PLAN.md before continuing, especially the anti-cheat and safety verdict, and back up save folders first as the plan suggests.
