What it does

When you ask where your project is in development, this skill scans your project folders (design docs, source code, prototypes, architecture notes, tests) and runs a bundled checker script to see which expected artifacts exist. It then estimates the current stage (from concept through production), checks whether the stage it infers matches any configured stage, and lists gaps and suggested next steps. It is built for a game studio workflow and reads files only, aside from possibly writing a report.

Great for

  • Game developers onboarding onto an existing project who want a quick map of what exists
  • Leads checking what is missing before a milestone or stage gate
  • Solo developers who want to know whether they have skipped design or architecture work

Skip it if

  • Non-game projects, since the stage model and artifact list are built around game development folders
  • Projects with work kept outside the repository, because the detector only sees what is in the folder and may report an earlier stage than reality

Try asking

  • “Where are we in development?”
  • “Check what is missing before our next milestone”
  • “What should the programmer work on next?”
  • “Analyze this project's state and recommend next steps”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Project Stage DetectionInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    project-stage-detect.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip project-stage-detect.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip project-stage-detect.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run it from the project root so the relative script paths resolve correctly
  • Set the workflow tier in project.yaml; at minimal tier optional documents are not flagged as gaps, so results will look different
  • Pass a role argument such as programmer or designer to focus the recommendations
