What it does

This skill checks whether a project's existing design docs, decision records, stories and config files are in the format that the Claude Code Game Studios template's other skills expect, not just whether they exist. It then sorts the problems by severity and writes a checkable migration plan file (docs/adoption-plan-[date].md) after asking for your go-ahead. It is meant to be run on a project that already has work in progress, before you rely on the template's automated skills.

Great for

  • Teams adopting the Claude Code Game Studios template on an existing game or project
  • Developers who want to know why template skills fail silently on their current documents
  • Leads who want a prioritised, step-by-step checklist before migrating artifacts

Skip it if

  • Brand-new projects with no existing artifacts, where there is nothing to audit (use the template's normal setup instead)
  • Anyone expecting it to fix files automatically: it only asks before writing a plan, and the reference files it loads were not included in this review, so the exact write behaviour is unverified
  • Projects where you do not want local config files and project YAML files read, since it inspects them directly

Try asking

  • “/adopt full”
  • “/adopt gdds to check whether my game design documents match the template format”
  • “/adopt infra to find missing registry, manifest or sprint-status files”
  • “/adopt stories before I start running the sprint skills”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Brownfield Template Adoption AuditInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 8 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    adopt.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip adopt.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip adopt.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run /adopt with a focus argument such as gdds or infra first to limit the scope of the audit
  • Review the summary before answering yes to writing the plan file
  • Commit or back up your project before acting on any migration step, since the migration helper may change config files
