What it does
This skill teaches the agent to use a command-line tool called goplaces to look up businesses and locations on Google Places. Once installed, the agent can search for things like coffee shops near a point, filter by open-now or minimum rating, resolve a place name to a place ID, and fetch details and reviews. It can return readable output or JSON for scripts.
Great for
- Travellers or locals who want the agent to find restaurants, shops or services with current ratings
- Developers building scripts that need Google Places data in JSON form
- People who already have a Google Places API key and want a scripted lookup tool
Skip it if
- Anyone without a Google Places API key, since the tool cannot run without one and Google may bill usage to that key
- Use cases needing offline or non-Google map data, because every query goes to Google's API
- Sensitive location tracking, since each search sends the queried place or coordinates to Google
Try asking
- “Find coffee shops near 40.8, -73.9 that are open now with at least a 4-star rating”
- “Get the details and recent reviews for this place ID”
- “Resolve 'Soho, London' to the matching place and list the top 5 results”
- “Search for sushi restaurants and return the results as JSON”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Store the API key in an environment variable rather than pasting it into chats, and restrict the key in Google Cloud Console to limit cost and abuse
- Use --limit and --json when you want predictable, script-friendly output and to control API usage
- Note that the type filter only uses the first --type value, so pass one type per search
