What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent how to set up the 1Password command-line tool (op), connect it to the 1Password desktop app, and sign in, including for multiple accounts. Once installed, the agent follows the official setup steps instead of guessing, checks that access works, and then can read or inject passwords and other secrets into commands without writing them to disk. It also tells the agent to never paste secrets into logs or chat.

Great for

  • Developers who want an AI agent to pull API keys or passwords from 1Password safely during coding tasks
  • People setting up the 1Password CLI for the first time on macOS or Linux with the desktop app
  • Users with several 1Password accounts who need the agent to pick the correct one

Skip it if

  • Anyone who wants the agent to bypass 1Password's approval prompts, since the skill requires the user to authorize sign-in in the desktop app and stops if that is not possible
  • Environments without tmux installed, because the skill says to stop and ask rather than run op commands outside tmux
  • Users who do not have a 1Password account, since the skill cannot create or access secrets without one

Try asking

  • “Install the 1Password CLI and check that it works on my machine”
  • “Sign me in to 1Password from the terminal and confirm my account is accessible”
  • “Read the database password from my 1Password vault and inject it into my app's run command”
  • “Set up 1Password CLI for my work account and my personal account and switch between them”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 3 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    1password.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip 1password.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip 1password.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Keep the 1Password desktop app unlocked before asking the agent to sign in, so the authorization prompt can be approved
  • Name the account explicitly (for example with --account) when you have more than one 1Password account
  • Prefer op run or op inject for secrets so values are not saved to files or shell history
