What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent to use the camsnap command-line tool to connect to IP cameras on your network (via RTSP or ONVIF) and capture a still image, a short video clip, or watch for motion. Once you add your cameras to a config file, you can ask the agent to take a picture from the kitchen camera or record five seconds of video. It also includes a discovery command to find cameras and a doctor command to test connectivity.

Great for

  • Homeowners or hobbyists who run their own IP cameras and want quick snapshots from an agent
  • Developers building home-automation or monitoring workflows that need camera frames
  • Anyone testing whether their cameras are reachable over RTSP/ONVIF

Skip it if

  • Capturing footage from cameras you do not own or have permission to access, which may be illegal or a privacy violation
  • Shared or workplace camera systems where the agent could expose sensitive footage, since the skill stores camera login details in a config file
  • Situations needing a managed, audited video security product; this is a thin wrapper around a local CLI

Try asking

  • “Take a snapshot from the kitchen camera and save it as kitchen.jpg”
  • “Record a 10-second clip from the front door camera”
  • “Watch the garage camera for motion and run a command when it triggers”
  • “Run a connectivity check on my cameras and tell me which ones respond”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    camsnap.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip camsnap.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip camsnap.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run a short test capture first to confirm the camera connection before requesting long clips.
  • Use camsnap doctor --probe to diagnose connection problems before troubleshooting further.
  • Avoid putting camera passwords directly in chat or command lines where they may be logged; use the config file instead, and restrict its file permissions.
