How to use it

  1. 1A passphrase appears straight away. Press New until you get one you like.
  2. 2Choose how many words. Five is good for most accounts, six or more for master passwords.

  4. 4Copy it, and store it in your password manager.
You give
Word count, separator, capitalisation and extras
You get
Random passphrase(s) with entropy in bits
Good to know
English words only. The entropy figure assumes the attacker knows the word list and your settings, which is the safe assumption. Re-rolling many times to pick a favourite slightly reduces real-world strength.

FAQ

How strong is a 5-word passphrase?

With a 2,300+ word list each word adds about 11.2 bits, so five words give about 56 bits and six give about 67 bits. That is comparable to a random 10–11 character password but far easier to remember.

Where do the words come from?

A built-in list of common, easy-to-spell English words with offensive and confusing words removed. The list ships with the page, so generation works offline and nothing is fetched.
