Version Bump & Release

Guides an agent through bumping, tagging, releasing and publishing a Claude Code plugin version

What it does

When installed, the agent follows a fixed release checklist for the claude-mem project: it updates the version number in about fifteen manifest and README locations, runs the build-and-sync command, commits, tags and pushes, creates a GitHub release, and regenerates the changelog from GitHub release notes. It also checks npm publishing through a GitHub Actions workflow and can draft and post a release announcement to X, but only if a browser is already logged in as the project's account.

Great for

  • Maintainers of the claude-mem repository who cut releases
  • Developers who maintain a Claude Code plugin with several version-carrying manifests and want a consistent release checklist

Skip it if

  • Projects other than claude-mem: the file list, scripts and npm workflow are specific to this repo and would need rewriting (wrong paths could mis-version files).
  • Anyone without push and release permissions, since the steps push tags and create public releases that are hard to undo; moving or recreating a pushed tag is discouraged by the skill itself.
  • Running unattended: it commits everything, pushes to main and posts publicly, so a human should review each step.

Try asking

  • “Bump the project to 2.1.0 and do the full release workflow”
  • “Prepare a patch release for the bug fixes merged since the last tag”
  • “Verify that all version files match the new version before I tag”
  • “Check the npm publish workflow run for v2.1.0 and confirm the dist-tag is latest”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Version Bump & ReleaseInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    version-bump.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip version-bump.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip version-bump.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review the git status and diff before the commit step, since the skill runs git add -A and commits everything.
  • Run the version grep checks yourself first; the file list in the skill may be out of date if new manifests were added.
  • Adapt the skill carefully for your own repository rather than running it unchanged; the X posting step should be removed unless you want it.
