What it does

When you ask about something from earlier work, such as a past decision, a file, or what was done last session, the agent searches your Claude-Mem memory on cmem.ai. That memory holds short timestamped notes collected from your previous sessions across agents like Claude Code and Codex. The agent then answers in plain language from the matching notes instead of guessing or asking you to repeat yourself.

Great for

  • Developers who use Claude Code or other agents and want to pick up where a previous session left off
  • People who already use the Claude-Mem service and have a cmem.ai account with an API key
  • Anyone who needs the timeline of when a decision or change was made

Skip it if

  • Users without a Claude-Mem / cmem.ai account or API key, since the search cannot run without one
  • Sensitive or confidential projects where you would not want search queries sent to a third-party cloud service (queries go to cmem.ai)
  • Tasks needing exact date or type filtering, because the SKILL.md notes some filters may be silently ignored by the cloud API

Try asking

  • “What do you remember about the authentication refactor we did last week?”
  • “Check claude-mem for the error we hit with the payment webhook.”
  • “What did we do last session on the billing project?”
  • “Find past observations about why we chose PostgreSQL.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Claude-Mem Memory SearchInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    mem-search.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip mem-search.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip mem-search.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Start with broad keywords such as project or file names, then narrow with specific terms from the first results.
  • Do not put secrets, passwords or tokens in search queries, because queries are sent to cmem.ai.
  • If searches return nothing, ask the agent to run the status diagnostic to check whether the API key is missing.
