What it does

This is a setup guide for installing the claude-mem memory plugin on an OpenClaw gateway (a server that runs AI agents). Once installed, agents record what tools they use, keep summaries of past sessions, and get that history injected into their system prompt so they remember earlier work. An optional feature forwards each new observation to a chat channel such as Telegram, Discord or Slack.

Great for

  • Operators running OpenClaw agents who want memory across sessions
  • Developers troubleshooting a claude-mem worker on a gateway
  • Teams that want a live feed of agent observations in a chat channel

Skip it if

  • Users who do not run an OpenClaw gateway, since the plugin only targets that runtime
  • Anyone who does not want agent activity recorded, because tool uses are logged as observations by default
  • Environments where piping a remote script into bash is not allowed, since the quick install does exactly that

Try asking

  • “Install claude-mem on my OpenClaw gateway with the quick installer”
  • “Check whether the claude-mem worker is healthy on port 37777”
  • “Set syncMemoryFile to false for one agent that manages its own memory”
  • “Walk me through verifying that observations are being recorded”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Claude-Mem OpenClaw Plugin SetupInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 15 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    openclaw.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip openclaw.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip openclaw.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review install.sh before running the curl one-liner, or clone the repo and run it locally, since it executes remote code.
  • Give each gateway or use case a unique project name so observations do not mix.
  • Confirm the worker responds at localhost:37777/api/health before changing the gateway config.
