What it does

Once installed, the agent can control Philips Hue smart lights in your home by running the OpenHue command-line tool. It can list your lights, rooms and scenes, switch them on or off, set brightness, colour temperature or colour, and activate scenes such as "Relax" or "Concentrate". The lights are controlled through your Hue Bridge on your local network.

Great for

  • People with Philips Hue lights who want to control them by asking their agent
  • Smart-home users who want quick presets like bedtime dimming or work mode
  • Users comfortable installing a command-line tool via Homebrew

Skip it if

  • Non-Hue smart devices, HomeKit scenes, TVs, thermostats or generic smart plugs, which the skill explicitly does not support
  • Users without a Hue Bridge on their local network, since the commands cannot reach the lights

Try asking

  • “Turn off the bedroom lamp”
  • “Dim the living room lights to 30 percent”
  • “Set the office to a bright, cool work mode”
  • “Activate the "Relax" scene in the bedroom”

  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip openhue.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip openhue.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Use the exact names of your lights, rooms and scenes as shown by the list commands so the agent targets the right ones.
  • Colour changes only work on colour-capable bulbs; white-only bulbs will ignore them.
  • Run the list commands first to confirm the bridge is reachable before asking for changes.
