What it does

Once installed, the agent can use the GitHub command-line tool (gh) to look up pull request status, review readiness, and CI workflow runs and logs, and to list, create, comment on, or close issues and pull requests. It can also run GitHub API queries for repository data such as labels, stars, and forks. It relies on your existing gh login, so it acts with your GitHub permissions.

Great for

  • Developers who review PRs and want the agent to check CI status or failed job logs
  • Maintainers triaging open issues across a repository
  • Teams who already use the gh CLI and want natural-language access to it

Skip it if

  • Local git work like commits, pushes, or branches, which the skill says to do with git directly
  • Non-GitHub hosts such as GitLab or Bitbucket, which need different CLIs
  • Anyone without gh installed and authenticated, since the skill depends on a logged-in gh session and cannot work without it

Try asking

  • “Check the CI status of PR 55 in owner/repo and tell me what failed”
  • “Show the failed step logs for the latest run of my main workflow”
  • “List open issues in owner/repo with their labels and creation dates”
  • “Summarize PR 55 with its title, author, and line changes”
Step-by-step guide: how to use GitHub CLI OperationsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    github.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip github.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip github.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Always pass --repo owner/repo so the agent targets the correct repository
  • Be explicit before asking for merges, closes, or reruns, since these write to GitHub with your credentials
  • Use a token with minimal scopes, because the agent inherits whatever access your gh login has
