What it does

When installed, the agent follows a set of git habits whenever it commits code or opens a pull request. It checks what is staged before committing, keeps each commit to one logical change, and writes messages in the Conventional Commits style (for example 'feat: add login rate limit'). For pull requests it pushes the branch, creates the PR with the GitHub CLI, and fills in what changed, why, and how it was tested. It also tells the agent to match any existing style the project already uses.

Great for

  • Developers who want consistent, reviewable commit history from an AI agent
  • Teams using Conventional Commits and the GitHub CLI for pull requests
  • Anyone who wants the agent to avoid committing secrets or unrelated changes by accident

Skip it if

  • Projects on GitLab, Bitbucket or other hosts, since the PR steps assume the gh CLI (GitHub) (the commit guidance still applies)
  • Repositories with their own strict commit rules that conflict with this format, unless the agent is told to follow the project's conventions first
  • Situations needing an automatic push or PR without review, since the skill still runs git and gh commands that affect shared remote repositories

Try asking

  • “Commit my staged changes with a good message”
  • “Split these changes into logical commits”
  • “Open a pull request for this branch against main”
  • “Review my recent git log and write a commit message that matches the project style”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    git-commit.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip git-commit.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip git-commit.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask the agent to show git status and the staged diff before it commits, so you can check what is going in.
  • Tell the agent your project's commit style if it differs; the skill says to follow existing repo conventions.
  • Review the PR body and base branch before the agent creates the pull request, since pushes and PRs are visible to others.
