What it does

When installed, the agent reviews code the way a senior engineer would: it looks for security issues such as injection, auth problems and sensitive data logging, performance problems such as algorithmic cost and caching, and quality and maintainability issues such as function length, complexity and naming. It then writes a report with an overall 1-5 score, prioritized critical issues with locations and example fixes, and findings grouped by category. Two small Python helper scripts can count functions, classes and rough complexity, and compare complexity before and after a change.

Great for

  • Developers who want a second set of eyes on a pull request or a file before merging
  • Teams that want consistent review reports with a fixed structure and severity levels
  • Developers who want quick rough complexity metrics for a Python file

Skip it if

  • Replacing a real security audit or penetration test, since the checks are prompt-driven and the scripts use simple regex counting that can miss or misreport issues
  • Reviewing non-Python code with the helper scripts, because they only parse Python-style keywords and syntax
  • Sensitive proprietary code if your agent setup sends code to an external service you have not approved

Try asking

  • “Review this pull request diff for security and performance problems.”
  • “Analyze the code quality of src/auth/session.py and give it a 1-5 score.”
  • “Compare the cyclomatic complexity of this file before and after my refactor.”
  • “Run a code review on this module and list critical issues with suggested fixes.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Code Review SpecialistInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 5 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    code-review-specialist.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip code-review-specialist.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip code-review-specialist.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent the exact files or diff to review, and say which language they are in, so the findings reference real line numbers.
  • Treat the complexity numbers as rough indicators; the regex-based counts ignore strings, comments and nesting structure.
  • Read the review checklist and finding template in the templates folder and ask the agent to follow them for consistent output.
