What it does

Obsidian is a note-taking app that stores notes as plain files in a folder called a vault. This skill teaches an AI agent to check whether Obsidian's official command-line tool is actually working, and if so, use it to read or search notes in your vault. If the tool is not ready, the agent falls back to reading the files directly. The skill is limited to reading: it tells the agent not to create, edit, move or delete notes through the command line.

Great for

  • People who keep an Obsidian vault and want an AI agent to look up notes, backlinks or tags
  • Users of the claude-obsidian product who need the agent to pick a reliable way to read their vault
  • Developers setting up agent access to a local Obsidian workspace

Skip it if

  • Anyone who wants the agent to create or change notes: the skill explicitly forbids CLI writes and routes changes through a separate transaction core that is not part of these files
  • Users without the claude-obsidian product installed, since the skill refers to scripts and reference files that must exist at a specific location

Try asking

  • “Check whether the Obsidian CLI is usable in my vault and tell me which transport you will use”
  • “Read my note called Project Plan and summarise it”
  • “Search my vault for notes mentioning quarterly budget”
  • “Show me the backlinks for my meeting notes note”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    wiki-cli.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip wiki-cli.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip wiki-cli.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask the agent to run detection with --peek first, which does not save any state to your vault
  • Only request a transport snapshot save (--force) when you want the saved transport.json file updated
  • Expect the agent to refuse note paths outside your vault, including symlinks, which is intended
