What it does

Obsidian Bases are saved database-style views of your notes, stored in .base files. With this skill installed, the agent knows the Bases file format, how to write filters, formulas, and table, card, list or kanban views, and how to check the result before you use it. It answers syntax questions read-only. If you ask it to change a .base file, it is meant to follow a reviewed transaction process within your vault under wiki/ rather than writing the file directly.

Great for

  • Obsidian users who want a reading list, task tracker or wiki page table inside their vault
  • People building Obsidian Bases views in the claude-obsidian setup who want guided, reviewable edits
  • Users who need help understanding Bases filter and formula syntax

Skip it if

  • Anyone needing guaranteed-correct date arithmetic: the file itself says date subtraction has conflicting documentation and formulas must be tested in their own Obsidian version first
  • Users on older Obsidian versions expecting kanban or card views: these need Obsidian 1.9 to 1.14+ and the skill notes an ordinary table fallback is needed otherwise
  • Users without the wider claude-obsidian product installed: the file refers to scripts and reference docs outside this skill folder that are not included here

Try asking

  • “Create a Bases table of all wiki pages showing status, type and last updated date”
  • “Draft a kanban view grouping my wiki notes by status in Obsidian 1.14 or later”
  • “Check my existing .base file for YAML or formula errors before I open it in Obsidian”
  • “Explain what a filter with and/or nesting does in my reading list base”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    obsidian-bases.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip obsidian-bases.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip obsidian-bases.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask for a read-only explanation or draft first, and review the preview before asking for any write to the vault
  • Check the Obsidian version you run, since kanban and card views depend on it, and test date formulas in your own app before relying on them
  • Keep the .base file under wiki/ as the skill requires, and review the transaction inspection output before approving the apply step
