What it does

Agent skills are folders of instructions that teach an AI agent a specific capability. This skill tells the agent to keep a catalogue (an index) of all skills installed on a machine or in a project, listing each skill's name, trigger text and file path. After you add, remove, rename or move a skill, it refreshes that catalogue so other agents or sub-agents can quickly pick the right skill and read its original instructions.

Great for

  • Developers who maintain many custom agent skills across projects
  • Teams using multi-agent workflows where a delegating agent must hand tasks to sub-agents with the right skill files
  • Users of the gentle-ai toolkit who want the registry kept in sync automatically

Skip it if

  • People with only one or two skills, where the index adds little value
  • Non-technical users who do not manage skill folders, since the instructions assume command-line tools and project directories
  • Setups where you do not want a .atl/ folder written into projects or changes made to .gitignore

Try asking

  • “Update skills — I just added a new skill, refresh the skill registry for this project.”
  • “Rebuild the skill registry with --force after I renamed two skills.”
  • “Show me which installed skill handles deployment tasks and give me its SKILL.md path.”
  • “Regenerate the skill index and tell me how many skills were found and whether any were duplicates.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Skill Registry IndexerInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    skill-registry.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip skill-registry.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip skill-registry.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run the refresh command with --force right after installing or editing skills so the index is not stale.
  • Keep project-level skills named distinctly from global ones, since project skills override global skills with the same name.
  • Check the output for skipped or duplicate skills to catch unexpected overrides.
