What it does

This skill guides an AI agent through a multi-step code change, such as a migration, one step at a time. For each step it makes the smallest possible edit to only the files that step lists, instead of regenerating whole files, so a person can review each change. After each step it writes a receipt file recording which files changed, a summary of the diff, and the reason, and it stops when every step is done or after a set number of iterations.

Great for

  • Developers running a planned code migration or refactor who want auditable, incremental diffs
  • Teams using the Open Design plugin pipeline that depends on a rewrite-plan step producing plan/steps.json
  • Reviewers who need a receipt and rationale for each change

Skip it if

  • Quick one-off edits or small fixes, where the plan, step, and receipt machinery adds overhead without benefit
  • Use outside the Open Design daemon: the SKILL.md alone does not supply the plan file, the file-edit tool, or the runner, so it will not work as a standalone skill
  • Unreviewed bulk changes to shell-tier files, which the skill itself only allows for high-risk steps or with explicit user confirmation

Try asking

  • “Apply the next step of my rewrite plan to migrate this module, one file edit at a time”
  • “Make only the localised change listed for step 3 and write a receipt explaining it”
  • “Skip step 5 with a rationale if its target file is outside the plan, then continue”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    patch-edit.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip patch-edit.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip patch-edit.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run rewrite-plan first so that plan/steps.json and code/index.json exist before invoking patch-edit
  • Review the receipts folder after each run to audit each diff and its rationale
  • Keep the iteration cap (OD_MAX_DEVLOOP_ITERATIONS) reasonable so runs stop predictably
