What it does

When installed, the agent pauses to plan before doing work. For broad requests it asks you one question at a time to clarify scope, constraints and preferences; for detailed requests it writes a plan directly. It can also run a Planner, Architect and Critic review loop, or critique an existing plan, and saves plans as files marked 'pending approval' so nothing is executed until you explicitly approve it.

Great for

  • Developers who want requirements clarified before the agent starts coding
  • Teams wanting a second-opinion review of an existing plan
  • Anyone with a vague idea who needs help scoping it

Skip it if

  • Quick, single, obvious fixes, where planning adds overhead and an execution skill is more direct
  • Autonomous end-to-end builds, where the autopilot skill is the intended tool
  • Simple questions the agent can answer directly

Try asking

  • “plan this: add role-based permissions to our admin dashboard”
  • “review this plan and point out gaps: <paste plan>”
  • “ralplan --consensus: migrate our user table to a new schema”
  • “Help me scope a vague idea for a reporting feature before we build it”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Strategic Planning SkillInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    plan.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip plan.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip plan.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Start with a clear goal and any known constraints so the agent asks fewer, better questions.
  • Use --consensus or --deliberate for high-stakes work involving auth, data migration or public APIs.
  • Review the saved plan file in .omc/plans and approve it explicitly before asking the agent to execute.
