What it does

When installed, the agent gets instructions for using the community gws command-line tool to work with Google Workspace apps such as Drive, Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Tasks and Slides, instead of guessing at raw API calls. It explains how to check for an existing access token, how to set up an OAuth client or service account if none exists, and how to log in with read-only permissions first. The skill does not include Google credentials itself; you must supply them.

Great for

  • People who regularly ask an AI agent to find, summarise or edit Google Docs, Sheets or Drive files
  • Teams automating Gmail or Calendar tasks with an agent in a controlled environment
  • Developers who already use the gws CLI and want the agent to drive it correctly

Skip it if

  • Anyone unwilling to grant an agent access to their Google account, since email and files can be read or changed once permissions are granted (use read-only scopes where possible)
  • Setups where you cannot install the npm package @googleworkspace/cli, since the skill depends on it
  • Unattended automation without a reviewed service account, because write access could act without a person checking

Try asking

  • “Read the latest rows in this Google Sheet and summarise them”
  • “List the files in my Drive folder called Q3 Reports”
  • “Draft a reply to the most recent email from my manager and check my calendar for a free slot”
  • “Create a new Google Doc with meeting notes from this text”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    google-workspace.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip google-workspace.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip google-workspace.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask for read-only access first and only request write permissions when a task actually needs them.
  • Tell the agent which Google surface you need (for example Sheets only) so the login picker is limited to those scopes.
  • Review any email send, file share or calendar change the agent proposes before it runs, since these are hard to undo.
