What it does

This is a template, not a working tool. It shows developers how a skill file is laid out: a SKILL.md with frontmatter settings (name, description, argument hints, pre-approved tools, optional model override) and plain-language instructions. Once installed, typing the example slash command makes the agent parse the arguments, act using the listed tools, and report back, but the task itself is generic and only illustrative.

Great for

  • Developers learning how to write their own Claude skills or slash commands
  • Plugin authors who want a starting template for the skills/<name>/SKILL.md layout

Skip it if

  • Anyone expecting a ready-made useful capability, since it contains no real domain logic (it is an example for copying)
  • Users who do not write skills; it adds little value outside of learning the format

Try asking

  • “Show me the frontmatter options supported by a skill in the skills/<name>/SKILL.md layout”
  • “Use this skill as a template to create a new slash command that takes two arguments”
  • “Explain how allowed-tools reduces permission prompts in a skill”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Example Command SkillInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    example-command.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip example-command.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip example-command.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Copy the folder and rename it, then change the name field to match the directory name
  • Keep allowed-tools to the minimum your skill needs so the agent asks for fewer permissions
