What it does

When someone sends the agent a document such as a Word file, presentation, spreadsheet, EPUB, CSV or text-based PDF, this skill tells the agent to use the Firecrawl AnyDoc command-line tool to convert it into plain Markdown text that the agent can read. The conversion runs locally inside the agent's container rather than on an outside service. The skill also tells the agent to treat document contents as untrusted data, never to follow instructions found inside them, and to report clearly when a file cannot be converted or may have lost visuals or formatting.

Great for

  • People who regularly send Word, Excel or slide files to an agent and want it to read them without uploading them to a third-party parser
  • Developers running agents in containers who need local, privacy-preserving document reading
  • Users who need the agent to summarise or extract text from text-based PDFs and office files

Skip it if

  • Scanned or image-only PDFs, because OCR is not supported and conversion will fail
  • Precise financial or numeric work from spreadsheets, because formatting such as percentages and hidden rows can be lost in the Markdown output
  • Documents whose meaning depends on images or charts, since embedded visuals may be reduced to alt text

Try asking

  • “Read the Q3 report.docx I just attached and summarise the key findings”
  • “Convert this slide deck attachment to Markdown and list the main topics per slide”
  • “Extract the text from this EPUB so we can discuss chapter 3”
  • “Turn this CSV into Markdown so you can compare the rows I describe”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    convert-documents-to-markdown.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip convert-documents-to-markdown.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip convert-documents-to-markdown.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Send the document as an attachment with its original filename so the agent can locate it reliably
  • For scanned PDFs, run OCR separately first, then attach the resulting text-based file
  • For spreadsheets, verify any numbers in the original workbook before relying on the agent's calculations
