What it does

Once installed, the agent acts as a thesis-writing helper. It first asks about your degree, thesis type, word count and existing material, then builds a structured outline, chapter drafts or a literature-review framework, delivered as a Word document. It is designed not to invent data, results or references: missing data is marked [TO ADD: data] and unsupported sentences are marked [CITATION NEEDED], so you can find and fill gaps yourself.

Great for

  • Students who have a research question and sources but need help structuring a thesis
  • Writers who want a chapter-by-chapter plan with word targets and writing points
  • Students organising a literature review by theme or timeline using papers they already have

Skip it if

  • Students who want the whole thesis written for them: the skill itself says it provides structure, drafts and revision only, and submitting AI-written work may breach academic integrity rules
  • Anyone needing fabricated or unverified references: the skill refuses to generate citations outside the user's material, so it will not supply a bibliography
  • Users needing live literature search: the skill contains no search or database tools and only suggests search keywords

Try asking

  • “Refine this topic into a thesis outline I can write from”
  • “Build a literature-review framework from these papers”
  • “Draft the methods chapter framework for my survey study, with placeholders for the data I still need”
  • “Assess whether my research question is specific enough and suggest narrowing options”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Thesis AdvisorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    thesis-advisor.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip thesis-advisor.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip thesis-advisor.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Provide your research question, reference list and any data tables up front so chapter drafts can cite your own sources by number or table name
  • Check every [CITATION NEEDED] and [TO ADD: data] placeholder yourself, and verify any academic statement the agent suggests against the original sources
  • Confirm the outline and formatting with your supervisor and your university's referencing style before writing
