What it does
Once installed, the agent can run a command-line tool called summarize to read a web link, a local file such as a PDF, or a YouTube video and return a short or detailed summary. For YouTube links it can also try to pull out a transcript. The skill tells the agent when to use the tool, which flags to pass, and which API keys are needed for the AI model that writes the summary.
Great for
- People who want quick summaries of long articles, reports or videos
- Anyone who needs a transcript of a YouTube video without installing yt-dlp
- Users who already have an OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI or Google API key
Skip it if
- Confidential or sensitive documents, because content is sent to a third-party AI provider and possibly to Firecrawl or Apify (the skill does not describe data handling)
- Situations needing guaranteed-accurate transcripts, since transcript extraction is described as best-effort
- Offline use, since the tool needs internet access and a model API
Try asking
- “Summarize this article: https://example.com/post”
- “What's this YouTube video about? https://youtu.be/...”
- “Transcribe this YouTube video and give me the key points”
- “Summarize the PDF at /path/to/report.pdf in short form”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Use --length short for a quick overview, and --extract-only when you want the raw transcript for URLs
- Set a default model in ~/.summarize/config.json to avoid passing --model every time
- Keep API keys in environment variables rather than pasting them into chat
