What it does

Once installed, when you give the agent a story file, it plans the story into beats, creates a consistent set of character and place reference paintings, paints one illustration per beat in one style, generates narration in a chosen voice with word timings, and assembles a video with camera moves, dissolves, captions and title cards. It then checks the rendered film and only delivers it after review. Think of it as an illustrated audiobook built from your own text.

Great for

  • Writers or teachers who want an illustrated, narrated video of a short story
  • Creators producing animated readings of their own fiction
  • Developers who want a working example of a multi-stage media pipeline

Skip it if

  • Relying on it for final publishing: the skill has no upload or publish path and output still needs human viewing, since character consistency is checked manually (it runs a render, not a guarantee of quality)
  • Projects needing a paid-service-free workflow: narration and images call paid external APIs (Fish Audio and Google) that cost money and send your text and images off your machine
  • Anyone who wants a live-action video, a video essay, or a single illustration; the skill's own description routes those to other tools

Try asking

  • “Turn the story at stories/the-lighthouse.md into an animated reading”
  • “Storyboard this story so I can review the shots before painting”
  • “Re-render the story film after I edited the narration”
  • “Paint the shots and render the story film with the narrator voice from my config”
Step-by-step guide: how to use StoryFilm: Narrated Animated Story FilmsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 15 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    StoryFilm.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip StoryFilm.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip StoryFilm.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run the storyboard step first and review it, because changing a plan is cheap while repainting forty shots is not
  • Keep your Fish Audio and Google keys in the environment file rather than in the story or prompts, and re-run intake after editing the story file so the film does not use stale text or voice settings
  • Set a licensed serif font in Config.json if you want a specific typeface; otherwise the bundled Source Serif 4 is used
