What it does

Once installed, the agent can look up academic papers on arXiv, the open preprint server, by topic, research category, or paper ID. It can list the latest submissions, run topic searches, and explain a single paper, using AlphaXiv's AI-generated overviews when they exist and falling back to the abstract when they don't. Results are meant to link back to arXiv and note why each paper matters to your stated interests.

Great for

  • Researchers or students who want to keep up with recent AI, ML, NLP or security papers
  • People who want a quick summary of a specific arXiv paper before deciding whether to read it in full
  • Anyone building a regular scan of new submissions in a few cs categories

Skip it if

  • Citing papers without checking: the skill itself warns that AlphaXiv overviews are AI-generated and must be verified against the actual paper before you cite them
  • General web research, which the skill says belongs to a separate Research skill
  • Non-arXiv sources such as journals, URL parsing or annual reports, which the description explicitly excludes

Try asking

  • “What's new in AI safety papers this week?”
  • “Search arxiv for prompt injection defenses”
  • “Explain this paper: 2401.12345”
  • “Find recent cs.MA papers on multi-agent systems”
Step-by-step guide: how to use ArXiv Paper SearchInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 4 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    ArXiv.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip ArXiv.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip ArXiv.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Name a category or topic words (for example 'cs.CL' or 'LLMs') so the agent maps your request to the right arXiv category.
  • Create a PREFERENCES.md in the ArXiv customizations folder to set your focus areas and priority categories; otherwise relevance is judged from your request alone.
  • Ask for the abstract or PDF link and check key claims yourself before citing any AlphaXiv summary.
