What it does

When installed, this skill makes an AI agent act as an onboarding guide for the AI Engineering from Scratch course, which has 542 lessons across 20 phases. It asks three short questions about your goals, weekly time and what you want to build, then runs a placement quiz (via a companion find-your-level skill) to pick a starting phase. It writes a LEARNING.md file in your current folder that the separate learn skill uses to track progress. It also routes you to dedicated tracks for MCP, Agent Skills or reverse engineering if you ask for them.

Great for

  • Beginners who want a structured starting point for the AI engineering course
  • Learners returning to the course who want to resume or restart their plan
  • Self-learners who want the agent to remember their goals and progress across sessions

Skip it if

  • Anyone who only wants a single answer about AI topics, since it is designed for a multi-session course (it creates and maintains files)
  • Users who do not want a LEARNING.md file written into their project folder
  • Users who rely on the companion skills (learn, find-your-level, learn-mcp and others) without installing them, because this skill hands off to them and will not work alone

Try asking

  • “Start learning AI engineering from scratch”
  • “Set up the course and place me at the right level”
  • “Onboard me to the curriculum and create my learning plan”
  • “Resume my MCP learning route”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Start Learning OnboardingInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    start-learning.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip start-learning.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip start-learning.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Answer the three interview questions in your own words; the plan uses them to explain lessons to you later.
  • If you already know your level, you can name a starting phase (0-19) to skip the quiz.
  • Keep LEARNING.md in the same folder each time so the learn skill can find your progress.
