What it does
This skill gives the agent a standard set of rules and tools for writing prompts, meaning the instructions you give other AI systems. When installed, the agent aims to describe the desired outcome, constraints, and output format rather than step-by-step procedures, and can fill reusable Handlebars templates with data via a bundled render script. It produces prompts to be used elsewhere, not the finished content itself.
Great for
- Developers building system prompts or agent briefs who want consistent structure
- People maintaining a library of reusable prompt templates driven by YAML or JSON data
- Teams auditing existing prompts against a documented ideal-state standard
Skip it if
- Generating final articles, code, or reports; the skill explicitly produces prompts only and points to domain skills for that
- Running prompt evaluations or grading outputs, which the skill says must go through a separate eval system (Assay)
- Users who need a no-setup solution, since the template tools require installing the handlebars package first
Try asking
- “Write a system prompt for a customer support agent that states the goals, limits, and output format”
- “Turn this YAML of team roles into a rendered agent roster using the Roster template”
- “Optimize this prompt so it states outcomes and constraints instead of step-by-step instructions”
- “Validate that this Handlebars template has no syntax errors or missing variables”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip Prompting.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip Prompting.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Run the Setup.md steps once to install handlebars before using RenderTemplate.ts or ValidateTemplate.ts
- Keep the data in .yaml files and the structure in .hbs templates so you can reuse the same template with different content
- Ask for a prompt to be tested before you rely on it, since the skill says untested prompts should not be declared ready
