What it does

This is an internal support package, not a tool you invoke directly. It holds reference notes on Nature-style writing (abstracts, introductions, results and discussions, figure and supplementary placement, terminology, ethics and compliance checks) that other installed Nature skills, such as writing, polishing, response, reader and slide-deck skills, load when they need a specific rule. When the agent is working on a paper through one of those skills, it can pull in only the relevant reference file so its suggestions follow these conventions.

Great for

  • Researchers who already use one of the sibling Nature skills and want consistent Nature-style guidance behind them
  • Developers maintaining the Nature Skills collection who need the shared reference layer

Skip it if

  • Users looking for a standalone paper-writing assistant: the SKILL.md says it should not be invoked directly and only works as a dependency of other skills
  • Anyone expecting official Nature journal policy: several files are described as corpus-derived patterns, not official rules

Try asking

  • “Install alongside nature-writing and ask for help drafting a Nature-style abstract (the other skill loads the shared abstract guidance)”
  • “Ask a Nature polishing skill to tighten a Discussion section using the shared argument-language rules”
  • “Ask the reader skill to check a manuscript's claim-repetition and caption allocation against the main-text discipline file”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Nature Shared ReferencesInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 15 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    nature-shared.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip nature-shared.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip nature-shared.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Install the dependent Nature skills as well, since this package does nothing useful on its own
  • Treat the Nature-style guidance as a stylistic reference and check against the current official journal author instructions before submission
  • Ask for a specific file or topic (for example the abstract or ethics rules) so the agent loads only what is needed
