What it does

This skill gives an AI agent a structured playbook for academic literature work. Once installed, the agent can search sources such as CrossRef, PubMed, arXiv, Scopus and ScienceDirect, check whether citations in a document are real, build PubMed MeSH search strategies, convert reference files (.nbib, .ris, .bib), and run citation-impact audits. It loads only the guidance relevant to the task, and an optional MCP server supplies live database tools.

Great for

  • Researchers doing literature reviews across multiple databases
  • Students checking that references in a paper are real and correctly formatted
  • Librarians or information specialists building PubMed search strategies

Skip it if

  • Translating papers or drafting manuscript prose, which the skill explicitly excludes
  • Relying on search results without checking them, since database access can be rate-limited or incomplete and results need human review
  • Use where Scopus or ScienceDirect access is needed without institutional credentials, as those tools require API keys

Try asking

  • “Search arXiv and PubMed for recent papers on transformer models in medical imaging and export them as BibTeX”
  • “Check whether the references in my draft manuscript exist and flag any mismatched DOIs”
  • “Build a PubMed MeSH search strategy for systematic reviews on type 2 diabetes and exercise”
  • “Convert this .nbib export from PubMed into a .ris file”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Academic Search RouterInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 15 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    nature-academic-search.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip nature-academic-search.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip nature-academic-search.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run install.sh with your real email address so PubMed requests identify you properly
  • Provide complete records when asking for offline citation-file conversion to avoid network lookups
  • Verify every citation the agent returns against the publisher page before submitting work
