What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent to operate the MuseScore 4 music notation program through its command-line interface. Once installed, the agent can transpose a score to another key or by a set number of semitones, pull out individual instrument parts, add or remove instruments, and export the score as PDF, PNG, MP3, MIDI, MusicXML or Braille. It can also inspect a score and compare two versions, and it can undo or redo changes in a session.

Great for

  • Musicians or arrangers who need a piece transposed for a different instrument or voice
  • Music teachers or ensemble librarians who need individual parts generated from a full score
  • Developers building automated music engraving or export pipelines around MuseScore

Skip it if

  • People without MuseScore 4 installed, since the skill wraps its mscore backend and will not work on its own
  • Users who want AI-composed music or audio generation, since this skill edits and exports existing scores rather than creating them

Try asking

  • “Transpose score.mscz to the key of D major and save it as out.mscz”
  • “Extract the Piano part from this score and export it as a PDF”
  • “Export this score as a 300 DPI PNG and verify the export”
  • “Show me the instruments in this score and add a Piano part”
Step-by-step guide: how to use MuseScore Notation CLIInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    skills.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip skills.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip skills.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Always give both an input file (-i) and a new output file (-o) for transposition and instrument edits so the original score is preserved.
  • Run media probe on an unfamiliar score first so the agent knows what it is working with before changing it.
  • Check the MuseScore 4 installation path before asking for exports, since the skill depends on that backend.
