What it does

When installed, the agent inspects a repository's GitHub Actions workflow files and recent run history to find what wastes CI time and money, such as missing dependency caches, missing concurrency cancellation, over-broad triggers, duplicate coverage, and unnecessary matrix runs. It then proposes up to three fixes ranked by estimated daily minutes saved, checks each against guardrails so required tests or release checks are not removed, and lists what was verified live versus only from files.

Great for

  • Engineers maintaining a GitHub repo whose CI bill or PR wait times have grown
  • Teams that want a structured audit of workflow YAML before making changes
  • Maintainers creating a first CI baseline for a new repository

Skip it if

  • Repos without GitHub Actions workflows, where the skill has little to audit
  • Work that needs guaranteed correctness without review, since fixes to CI can silently remove checks if applied without testing
  • Situations where the agent lacks shell or gh CLI access and only partial files are provided, which yields a static-only analysis that may be incomplete

Try asking

  • “Audit my .github/workflows folder and tell me the top three changes that would cut our CI minutes.”
  • “Our PRs take 25 minutes to get feedback; find where the time goes and propose fixes.”
  • “Add lockfile-based caching and concurrency cancellation to our CI workflows, keeping all release checks.”
  • “Create a before-and-after efficiency report for our GitHub Actions changes.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use GitHub Actions Efficiency AuditorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 5 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    github-actions-efficiency.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip github-actions-efficiency.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip github-actions-efficiency.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Provide the gh run list output and workflow files up front so the agent can work from evidence rather than guesses.
  • Ask for a static-only analysis explicitly if you cannot grant CLI access, and treat its savings estimates as provisional.
  • Review every proposed change yourself before merging, especially any that touch release, migration, or schema checks.
