What it does
This skill acts as a dispatcher for GitHub Agentic Workflows (automated AI-driven workflows that run in GitHub repositories). When you ask the agent to design, create, update, debug or upgrade one of these workflows, it works out what kind of task you mean, then loads the matching instruction file from the github/gh-aw project and follows it. It also checks for an optional repository-specific instructions file that can override the defaults.
Great for
- Developers who maintain GitHub Agentic Workflows in a repository and want the agent to pick the right guidance file
- Teams standardising how gh-aw workflows are designed, debugged or upgraded
- People who want a clarifying question asked when a request is ambiguous
Skip it if
- Anyone who is not writing or maintaining GitHub Agentic Workflows, since the skill is specific to that system
- Situations where the referenced gh-aw files are unavailable: the skill depends on files fetched from another repository, so it will not work fully offline or without access to github/gh-aw
Try asking
- “Design a new agentic workflow that triages issues in this repository”
- “Debug why my gh-aw workflow failed on its last run”
- “Upgrade our existing agentic workflows and fix deprecated syntax”
- “Add a skill to an agentic workflow using the skills frontmatter”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Name the task clearly (design, create, debug, or upgrade) so the right prompt is loaded quickly
- Keep a .github/aw/instructions.md file in your repo to enforce local conventions over upstream defaults
- Review any workflow changes the agent proposes before merging, since the referenced guidance is fetched from an external repository
