What it does

When you ask an AI agent to commit your code, this skill tells it to read your repository's commit rules and recent messages, look at the changes, group related files, and write a standardized commit message such as "feat(auth): add token refresh". It then runs git commit itself. It also includes safety rules: no pushing, no rewriting history, no skipping hooks, and no committing secret files like .env or private keys.

Great for

  • Developers who want consistent, Conventional Commits-formatted messages without writing them by hand
  • Teams splitting a large set of changes into several logical commits
  • Users of agents who regularly type /commit and want a predictable workflow

Skip it if

  • People who only want a commit message drafted and no commit made; the skill says not to use it for that case
  • Work needing pushes, pull requests, rebases or history edits, which the skill explicitly excludes; reason: those actions are out of scope and can alter shared history
  • Repositories with different commit conventions if the agent misreads them; the skill says repository rules override it, but this should be checked

Try asking

  • “/commit”
  • “Split my current changes into separate commits by feature and commit each one”
  • “Make a conventional commit for the login bug fix I just made”
  • “Commit only the test files and write a fix message with a Closes footer”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    git-commit.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip git-commit.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip git-commit.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review the staged file list and the proposed message before letting the agent commit, especially when splitting changes.
  • Keep a commitlint config or CONTRIBUTING.md in the repo so the agent follows your team's rules over the defaults.
  • Ask for a message only if you want to review it first, since this skill is designed to run git commit directly.
