What it does

When installed, this skill makes the agent behave like a careful theory collaborator. Given messy formulas, notes or a research goal, it first fixes exactly what is being derived, identifies the core quantity that should organise the argument, and writes out assumptions and notation. It then labels each step as an exact identity, a proposition needing conditions, an approximation, or an interpretation, and saves the result as a structured Markdown derivation file (by default DERIVATION_PACKAGE.md in the project folder). If the notes cannot support a coherent derivation, it writes a blocker report instead of a polished but misleading story.

Great for

  • Researchers who have scattered equations and need a clean derivation outline before writing a paper
  • Students turning lecture notes or draft theory into a checkable chain of steps
  • Teams that want assumptions and approximations explicitly flagged in theory notes

Skip it if

  • Producing a finished, fully rigorous theorem proof: the skill explicitly targets derivation packages rather than completed proofs, and its output still needs expert checking (it may also call a lean-formalize skill, which is not included here)
  • Writing final paper or appendix LaTeX sections automatically: the skill is told not to write into paper files unless the user asks, so a human must move content across
  • Non-research tasks such as general algebra homework or code debugging, where this structured research workflow adds overhead

Try asking

  • “Organise these scattered equations from my notes into a derivation package with assumptions and approximations marked”
  • “Help me choose the invariant object for my utility-based model before I derive the main result”
  • “Turn my theory notes in theory/draft.md into a paper-ready formula document, flagging any heuristic steps”
  • “Write a blocker report explaining why my current derivation chain cannot yet be made coherent”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    formula-derivation.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip formula-derivation.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip formula-derivation.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent your exact notation, assumptions and the target result up front so it does not have to guess the interpretation
  • Point it to a specific file path for the derivation draft, otherwise it will default to DERIVATION_PACKAGE.md in the project root
  • Always have a domain expert check each step labelled as a proposition or approximation before relying on it
