What it does

When installed, the agent can review a paper's bibliography before submission. It cross-checks each citation against canonical sources to confirm the cited work exists, that authors, year and venue are correct, and that the cited paper really supports the sentence where it is used. It then writes a per-entry report (CITATION_AUDIT.md and a JSON ledger) and can propose sentence rewrites instead of editing the bib file when soft-only mode is used.

Great for

  • Researchers preparing a paper for submission who want to catch hallucinated or wrong references
  • Students checking that their reference list is accurate before handing in a thesis or report
  • Teams that want a gated, repeatable bibliography check as part of a paper-writing pipeline

Skip it if

  • Half-written drafts with placeholder text, because most checks depend on the surrounding claims being final and the skill's authors say it wastes effort there
  • Replacing a human's final judgement on citations, since the verdicts come from an AI reviewer that may still make mistakes
  • Running on a timer or in a loop, since the skill is designed to run once after the bibliography is finalized

Try asking

  • “Check citations in my paper before I submit it to the conference”
  • “Verify references in my thesis directory and flag any wrong years or authors”
  • “Run a citation audit in soft-only mode so the bib file is not changed”
  • “Find uncited entries in references.bib using the --uncited option”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Citation AuditInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    citation-audit.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip citation-audit.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip citation-audit.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run it once after the bibliography is final, not on a schedule or in a loop
  • Use the soft-only flag if you need to keep your .bib file frozen and review sentence-level rewrite proposals instead
  • Read the per-entry verdicts yourself, especially wrong-context findings, before changing your paper
