Citation Cross-Check

Audits a paper's bibliography field-by-field against web records using two blind agents

What it does

When installed, the agent checks every reference in a LaTeX paper's .bib file against independently fetched web records (arXiv, DBLP, CrossRef, ACL Anthology, and similar) to catch wrong authors, years, venues, or DOIs. It uses a double-blind setup: one agent extracts the local entry, another re-fetches the paper's record without seeing the .bib, and a mechanical diff flags discrepancies. The main agent then assigns MATCH, MINOR, or MISMATCH verdicts and exports a side-by-side spreadsheet.

Great for

  • Authors certifying bibliography accuracy before journal or conference submission
  • Researchers who want field-level checks beyond simple existence checks
  • Teams that already use a citation-audit style review and want an extra accuracy pass

Skip it if

  • Checking whether a citation supports the claim it is attached to, since the skill reads only bibliographic data, not the .tex text (use citation-audit for that)
  • Running on a timer or in a loop, because the skill is meant to run once after the bibliography is final

Try asking

  • “Run citation crosscheck on my paper directory before I submit to the conference”
  • “Verify my bib against scholar records and export a spreadsheet of mismatches”
  • “Do a double-blind bib field audit of the cited entries only”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Citation Cross-CheckInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    citation-crosscheck.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip citation-crosscheck.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip citation-crosscheck.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Point the argument at the directory containing the main .tex file so the scan skips unrelated template or example folders
  • Run it once after the bibliography is finalized rather than repeatedly, since verdicts only change when the .bib changes
  • Review the MISMATCH rows in the exported spreadsheet manually before editing the .bib, and treat NEEDS_WEBCHECK entries as requiring a URL check rather than as fabricated
