What it does
Once installed, the agent can run searches through Exa, an AI-powered search service, instead of relying only on its built-in knowledge. It can find current news and web pages, pull code examples and API docs, look up company background and people profiles, and read full web pages from a URL. It can also start a longer background research job and check back for the results.
Great for
- Developers who want up-to-date code examples and API documentation while coding
- Analysts or founders doing competitor and company due diligence
- People who need recent news or web facts the agent may not know about
Skip it if
- Tasks that need no live information, since every search is a paid external call and adds latency (reason: unnecessary cost and delay)
- Looking up private individuals or sensitive personal data, since the people search tool returns public professional profiles that could be misused (reason: privacy risk)
- Anyone who cannot set up an Exa account and API key, since the skill does not work without them (reason: requires a paid external service)
Try asking
- “Search the web for the latest AI developments in 2026 and summarise the top five results”
- “Find Python asyncio patterns with code examples from GitHub and Stack Overflow”
- “Give me company research on Vercel including recent funding news”
- “Start a deep research job on WebAssembly component model adoption and report back when it finishes”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Set up the MCP server in ~/.claude.json first, and keep the API key out of shared or public config files
- Use web_search_advanced_exa with includeDomains or date filters to get more precise results
- Lower tokensNum for focused code snippets and raise it for broader context
