What it does
This skill is a bundle of prepared prompts for upgrading older .NET (.NET Framework or .NET Core/Standard) projects to a modern version such as .NET 8. Once installed, the agent can use these prompts to classify projects, check NuGet package and dependency compatibility, decide an upgrade order, suggest CI/CD pipeline changes, and draft test plans, PR structure and checklists. It only provides guidance and templates; it does not itself run any upgrade tool.
Great for
- Engineering teams planning a migration from .NET Framework or older .NET Core to .NET 8
- Developers who want a structured checklist for upgrading a multi-project solution
- Tech leads who need draft PR, testing and stakeholder communication templates
Skip it if
- Small, simple projects that can be upgraded directly with Microsoft's own tooling, since the prompts add planning overhead
- Anyone expecting the agent to automatically modify code or run the upgrade: the file contains only prompt text, and its suggestions still need human review and testing
Try asking
- “Classify all projects in my solution by framework and tell me which ones to upgrade first”
- “Find legacy packages.config projects and suggest PackageReference migration steps”
- “Create an upgrade checklist and PR template for moving this solution to .NET 8”
- “Review our Azure DevOps YAML pipelines for UseDotNet@2 version pinning”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Point the agent at the solution folder so it can read the .csproj files before applying these prompts
- Ask for one prompt group at a time (for example discovery first, then sequencing) to keep output manageable
- Treat generated version numbers and API replacements as suggestions and verify them against Microsoft's official upgrade documentation
