What it does

This skill lets an agent temporarily switch off a community skill that was installed through the claude-for-legal hub. It renames the skill's SKILL.md to SKILL.md.disabled so the agent stops treating it as active, and if the skill has hooks, renames hooks.json so its automatic triggers stop firing. Everything else stays in place, so the skill can be turned back on later by running the command again.

Great for

  • Legal teams or developers who want to pause a community skill without uninstalling it
  • Users troubleshooting whether a particular skill is causing unexpected behavior
  • People who want to keep a skill's configuration while it is inactive

Skip it if

  • Removing a skill permanently, since this only renames files and does not delete them (use the uninstall workflow instead)
  • Disabling first-party plugin skills, which the skill itself forbids
  • Anyone expecting it to work on skills not installed through the hub, since it checks the install log first

Try asking

  • “disable the contract-redline community skill”
  • “disable [skill name] while I test whether it causes the issue”
  • “re-enable the citation-checker skill I disabled last week”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Disable Community SkillInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    disable.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip disable.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip disable.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Check the install log or ask the agent to show the planned paths before confirming, since the skill asks for an explicit yes before renaming.
  • Use the same skill name when re-enabling so the skill-manager workflow can find the disabled copy.
  • Remember that disabling only affects discovery and hooks; the skill's files remain on disk.
