What it does

This skill makes an AI agent act as a compliance reviewer for an organisation's AI policy. In sweep mode it reads recent AI impact assessments, triage results and vendor reviews from a configured outputs folder, compares them with the published policy and a use-case registry, and reports gaps as REQUIRED or ADVISABLE, with suggested replacement language. In direct-query mode, you describe a planned AI practice and it reports whether the policy covers it, misses it, or conflicts with it. It only reads files and drafts suggestions; it does not change the policy itself, and it updates its tracking stamps only after a human acknowledges the results.

Great for

  • Legal or compliance teams that maintain an internal AI policy and want to catch drift between policy and practice
  • Governance leads who want to check whether a planned AI use case needs a policy update before launch
  • Organisations already using the Claude for Legal plugin set with AIAs and triage outputs stored in a folder

Skip it if

  • Organisations without a written AI policy or without the configured CLAUDE.md and outputs folder, since the skill depends on those files to work
  • Final legal sign-off: suggested language is drafted by the agent and must be reviewed by qualified counsel before adoption
  • Scheduled weekly sweeps: the skill itself cannot schedule runs; that needs a separate scheduler integration not bundled with it

Try asking

  • “policy sweep”
  • “does our AI policy cover using AI to automatically flag expense reports for review?”
  • “we want to start using a new AI vendor that trains on customer data — does the policy need updating?”
  • “run the policy monitor”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Policy MonitorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    policy-monitor.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip policy-monitor.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip policy-monitor.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run /ai-governance-legal:cold-start-interview first so the outputs folder and policy document paths are configured before a sweep
  • Describe proposed practices concretely (automation level, affected people, vendor, data use) so the direct-query diff is accurate
  • Review every suggested clause against the actual policy document, since the CLAUDE.md commitments are only a summary
