What it does
Once installed, the agent can search academic papers through the DeepXiv service and read them in layers: first a short brief, then a section map, then one named section, and only read the full paper if needed. This avoids loading whole papers into the conversation too early. It can also list trending papers, run a DeepXiv web search, and fetch Semantic Scholar metadata by ID. It requires the separate deepxiv-sdk command-line tool and a token.
Great for
- Researchers doing literature reviews who want quick summaries before reading full papers
- Students who need the key section of a paper, such as the Introduction or Methods
- Users of the ARIS research workflow who want DeepXiv as one of several paper sources
Skip it if
- Anyone needing paywalled or non-open-access papers, since the skill targets open-access sources (limited coverage)
- Users who do not want the tool to call external services or store a DeepXiv token in ~/.env (the CLI may save credentials automatically)
Try asking
- “Search DeepXiv for recent papers on agent memory and show the top 5 in a table”
- “Give me a brief summary of arXiv paper 2409.05591”
- “Show the section map of 2409.05591, then read only its Introduction”
- “What papers are trending on DeepXiv in the last 14 days?”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Start with a search or a brief, and ask for a specific section only when you need it, to save time and context.
- Set DEEPXIV_TOKEN yourself in the environment if you do not want the CLI to auto-register a token or write to ~/.env.
- Check the adapter message the skill prints at startup to see whether the bundled script or the raw deepxiv CLI is being used.
