What it does

Once installed, the agent breaks a topic into several sub-questions, searches the web through firecrawl or exa connectors, reads the most promising pages in full, and writes a structured report where each claim links to its source. It also flags unverified claims and admits gaps in its findings. It relies on external search tools rather than its own memory, so the quality depends on those tools being configured.

Great for

  • Professionals doing competitive analysis, market sizing or due diligence who need sourced summaries
  • Students or analysts who want a cited overview of a technology or topic
  • Anyone who already has firecrawl or exa set up and wants a repeatable research process

Skip it if

  • Quick factual questions, since the multi-step search process is slow and token-heavy
  • Medical, legal or financial decisions made on the report alone, because web sources may be outdated or wrong and the skill does not verify them beyond cross-referencing
  • Research on private or paywalled material, since it can only read what the search tools can access

Try asking

  • “Research the current state of nuclear fusion energy”
  • “Deep dive into Rust vs Go for backend services in 2026”
  • “Investigate the competitive landscape for AI code editors”
  • “What's happening with the US housing market right now?”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Deep Research with CitationsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    deep-research.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip deep-research.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip deep-research.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Name the decision or goal up front so the agent can skip clarifying questions and pick the right depth
  • Install both firecrawl and exa for better coverage, as the skill recommends
  • Ask for the report to be saved to a file for long topics and check the cited sources yourself before relying on them
