What it does

When you ask the agent to start a new Spring Boot backend, this skill tells it to walk you through creating a ready-to-run Java project. It downloads a project template from start.spring.io with common dependencies preselected, adds API docs, test and database settings, writes a docker-compose file that starts Redis, PostgreSQL and MongoDB locally, and finally runs the Maven tests to check everything works.

Great for

  • Java developers starting a new Spring Boot service who want a quick, consistent baseline
  • Teams prototyping an app that needs relational, cache and document databases locally

Skip it if

  • Production projects, because the skill hardcodes the password rootroot in configuration files and docker-compose, and enables SQL logging and ddl-auto=update
  • Anyone without Java 21, Docker and Docker Compose installed, since the steps fail without them
  • Projects that need a different Spring Boot version or stack, unless the user edits the bootVersion and dependency list first

Try asking

  • “Create a new Spring Boot project called orders-api with Postgres and Redis”
  • “Scaffold a Java 21 Spring Boot skeleton with Docker Compose for local development”
  • “Set up a Spring Boot starter with SpringDoc and ArchUnit tests”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 9 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    create-spring-boot-java-project.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip create-spring-boot-java-project.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip create-spring-boot-java-project.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review the generated application.properties and docker-compose.yaml and replace rootroot with your own secrets before using anything beyond local testing
  • Set the projectName input and edit packageName and bootVersion in the instructions if you do not want the defaults
  • Run the optional docker-compose commands only when you need the databases running, and check that ports 5432, 6379 and 27017 are free
