What it does

When installed, the agent reviews the whole project and workspace, then drafts a comprehensive, well-organised README.md in a clean, concise style using GitHub Markdown. It is told to follow the structure and tone of several example READMEs it fetches by URL, avoid overusing emojis, leave out LICENSE or CONTRIBUTING sections (which belong in their own files), and use the project's logo in the header if one exists.

Great for

  • Maintainers of open source projects who need a first draft of a README
  • Developers starting a new repository who want a consistent structure quickly
  • Students or hobbyists publishing a small project who are unsure what a good README contains

Skip it if

  • Projects where the README must match an exact, pre-approved template or legal wording, since the agent writes freely from its own review (it may get facts wrong and needs checking)
  • Repositories with sensitive internal details, because the agent reads the whole workspace and the draft may expose secrets or internal names if published without review

Try asking

  • “Create a README.md for this project”
  • “Write a comprehensive README for my workspace with a header logo and usage section”
  • “Draft a concise GitHub-flavoured README for this library, including admonition notes where useful”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Create README GeneratorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    create-readme.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip create-readme.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip create-readme.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask the agent to review the draft against the actual code and remove any claims it cannot verify before publishing.
  • Mention the audience and key features in your request so the README focuses on what matters to them.
  • Check the tone and emoji use yourself, since the skill asks for restraint but the output may still vary.
