What it does
Once installed, the agent can build an llms.txt file in a repository root, a short Markdown index that tells language models where to find the project's most important documentation. The skill walks the agent through reviewing the llms.txt spec, scanning the repo structure and docs, grouping key files into sections, and writing links with short descriptions. It is a set of written instructions only; it contains no scripts.
Great for
- Maintainers of open-source or internal repositories who want AI assistants to understand their project quickly
- Developers preparing documentation so LLM tools can find specs, examples and setup guides
Skip it if
- Projects that need a fully automated, validated tool: the skill relies on the agent to check links manually and does not include a validator
- Anyone expecting the file to be verified against the live llms.txt spec: the skill tells the agent to check the spec at llmstxt.org, but the agent may not be able to fetch it, so compliance is not guaranteed
Try asking
- “Create an llms.txt file for this repository based on its structure”
- “Write an llms.txt index that points LLMs to our docs, specs and examples”
- “Review our repo and draft a llms.txt with an Optional section for secondary files”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Review the generated llms.txt before committing, since the agent's file selection and descriptions may need editing
- Ask the agent to confirm that every linked path exists in the repo, because the skill asks for link checks but does not automate them
- Note that the SKILL.md text appears truncated at the end of its success criteria, so the agent may have less guidance there
