What it does

When you want to weigh a decision, this skill makes the agent convene a small panel of AI members, each briefed with a different name, role and stance on your topic. They argue over several rounds, respond to each other's specific points, and you receive the full round-by-round transcript plus a synthesis. A QUICK mode runs just one round for a fast check of initial positions.

Great for

  • People facing a decision with real trade-offs who want pushback rather than a flat pros-and-cons list
  • Developers comparing technical options such as architectures or APIs
  • Anyone who wants to see where disagreement remains instead of a forced consensus

Skip it if

  • Pure adversarial attack or red-teaming, which the skill itself redirects to a separate RedTeam skill
  • Quick factual lookups, since a multi-agent debate is slow and costly in tokens
  • Decisions that need confidential data sent to outside model vendors, because the setup routes a member to a second vendor and the debate content leaves your machine

Try asking

  • “Council: should we use WebSockets or SSE for this dashboard?”
  • “Quick council check: is this API design reasonable?”
  • “Council: weigh these three vendor options and tell me the strongest objection to each”
  • “Debate the pros and cons of moving our service to serverless”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Council DebateInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 6 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    Council.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip Council.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip Council.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the council the full context up front (numbers, files, constraints) so members argue about your actual decision rather than a generic one
  • Use QUICK for a fast sanity check and DEBATE when the decision is costly to reverse
  • Read the strongest standing objection and the 'what would flip it' section rather than only the verdict
