What it does
This skill teaches the agent how to write application code that uses the GitHub Copilot SDK, a programmatic interface to the same agent engine behind Copilot CLI. Once installed, the agent can scaffold projects in TypeScript, Python, Go or .NET, set up sessions, stream responses, define custom tools with schemas and handlers, and connect to MCP servers. It is aimed at people building their own software on top of Copilot rather than end users.
Great for
- Developers embedding an AI agent inside their own app or internal tool
- Teams wanting custom tools or MCP server connections driven by Copilot
- Developers comparing SDK usage across TypeScript, Python, Go and .NET
Skip it if
- Non-programmers who only want to chat with Copilot (no code is needed for that; this skill is for writing code)
- Production use without reviewing the permission handling: the examples use approveAll, which automatically approves every permission request the agent makes, so it can edit files or run tools without asking
- Projects without a Copilot subscription or authenticated environment, since the examples will not run
Try asking
- “Create a TypeScript console app that sends a prompt to Copilot and prints the answer”
- “Add streaming output to my Python chatbot using the Copilot SDK”
- “Define a custom tool called get_weather that my Copilot agent can call”
- “Connect my app to an MCP server using the Copilot SDK”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip copilot-sdk.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip copilot-sdk.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Replace approveAll with a custom permission handler before deploying so you can review file edits and tool calls
- Pin SDK and runtime versions in your project to avoid surprises, since the Python wheel downloads a runtime on first use if not pre-fetched
- Check the SDK's own documentation for current model names, since the examples hardcode gpt-4.1
