What it does

When installed, the agent knows how to populate a Convex database (a hosted backend database for web apps) with test or starter data. It can write a seed function that inserts sample rows, or prepare data files for bulk import with the Convex command line tool, and it aims to make the process repeatable so running it twice does not duplicate data. It also checks row counts afterward and warns against putting secrets or personal data into a shared database.

Great for

  • Developers building an app on Convex who need realistic sample data for local or staging work
  • Teams migrating existing records into a Convex project via bulk import
  • Anyone who wants repeatable, re-runnable database fixtures for testing

Skip it if

  • Production databases with real user data, where an unreviewed seed or import could overwrite or corrupt records; review every step first
  • Projects that do not use Convex, since the instructions only cover Convex commands and schemas

Try asking

  • “Write a seed function that adds 50 sample users and posts to my Convex project”
  • “Import this CSV of products into my Convex database using npx convex import”
  • “Make my existing seed script safe to run multiple times without duplicating rows”
  • “Check how many rows each table has after seeding”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Convex Database SeedingInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    convex-seed.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip convex-seed.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip convex-seed.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review the generated seed function and target deployment before running it, especially if the deployment is shared.
  • Ask the agent to use clear-then-insert or upsert logic so re-runs stay consistent.
  • Keep sample data free of real personal information and credentials.
